So this week, Multi-Zone Conferences were held in the California Riverside Mission. This past weekend, General Conference was broadcast from Salt Lake City, Utah. We were certainly inspired by the many messages we heard from the General Authorities of the Church and the training we received from our mission leaders.
Multi-Zone conferences were good. Our zone's musical number was a little bit of a flop. They sang Redeemer of Israel out of the hymnbook, but they tried to sing the parts, but there were only 1 or 2 people that had any vocal or music training. So there weren't enough people to carry the parts and it just kind of fell apart. But as the accompanist you don't take any blame for the vocal presentation, so it was alright. As for the conference itself, it was awesome! They reviewed some of the things that Elder Hamula taught on his mission tour 15 months ago, and that was pretty cool because the week before at DDM I'd based my training on some of his comments. So I guess that I was on the same wavelength as President Mullen. We also had training on companionship inventory again. I think that they are going to do that every time for the next little bit or at least until people start having comp inventory on a regular basis. The focus this time was on humility in accepting and giving criticism. We also got the new Easter video and how to use it in our missionary work for the next few weeks. It's a super cool video, and the challenge we're extending is for members to have a gospel conversation at least once a week, and when they do to share the video and invite them to learn more. A little bit of a twist from what we've done in the past but I think it's a good change.
As for General Conference, I'll just give you the highlights from some of my notes:
"Light of Christ allows people to be moral but non-religious". Should attribute their righteousness to God still and tell them it is due to God that they are able to be such a person. President Eyring
"Covenants paramount, obedience exact, then can ask in faith." M Joseph Brough
"It is our choice whether to walk with God. He won't leave the path." Weatherford T Clayton
"Diversity is important, everyone is valuable as themselves, within the bounds of discipleship" Elder Holland
"Improve your Sabbath Day Observance." Elder Anderson
"Be Worthy, Stay Worthy" Elder Bednar
"Read the Book of Mormon Daily!" President Monson
"Unity of the Godhead" Elder Oaks
"Guilt vs Shame Culture" Elder Christofferson
"It's okay to ask for relief or help, as long as you are willing to accept God's will." -C Scott Grow
"Flirt to Convert" Joaquin E Costa
"See others as the Lord sees them." S Mark Palmer
Overall I felt the focus of General Conference was on trying harder and focusing on keeping your covenants through prayer, study, Sabbath Day observance, temple attendance, and personal worthiness. It was a really good conference I thought and I'm sure President Mullen will identify some talks for us to focus on in our teaching and study for the next 6 months.
